Re- tourquing the head may buy you some time but changing it is inevitable. I still think it is worth trying as all 99 9-3 seemed to have the same issue though they always made me change the gasket. As far as the breather mod I would worry more about whether your oil pan is full of sludge as this is a major issue with these cars. One trick is to pull out your dipstick and look for anything that looks like coffee grounds on it. Another way would be to drain the oil into a clean pan and then look for the same thing. The problem is the oil pickup screen is to fine a mesh and gets clogged causing low oil pressure and serious engine damage. Be SURE your oil pressure light works. If you find any signs of this problem you should have the oil pan removed and cleaned. If it is really bad it should be done periodically until it stays clean. We always thought it was just peaple not changing their oil but now we have one that has all its records and still has the problem. One theary is saab hopes to fix the problem with the breather mod you spoke of but it is to soon to say. I would check this before I had the headgasket done.
