If the engine has been neglected before you bought it, it is very difficult to clean out the dirt by just doing oil changes.
Even the flush machines are not good at that if the damage is already done.
Taking the valve cover off and dropping the oil pan is the best way to clean out the crude.
The 2001 9-3 engine in the picture had 16K miles on the odometer and had seen two oil changes in its life, one at 5K and the last one at 15K.
