Re freezing rain: Check to make sure that the air is coming out the vent along the bottom of the windshield. If it's hot enough to heat the cabin to 90 degrees, it's hot enough to prevent rain from freezing on the windshield. If the air is coming out of the wrong vent (it's been known to happen, if something breaks inside the dash; air might come out of floor vent even if windshield is selected), that would explain why the windshield isn't clear.
Re thermostat: Is the gauge at 8 o'clock when you cold-start the car? Or only after the car warms up? The gauge shouldn't move once the car is warmed up. If it does move, that means you have a faulty thermostat. If the gauge is at 8 o'clock even when you start the car, then either the gauge or the sensor is broken.
The search engine is rudimentary. You can try google.saabnet.com, but it doesn't search the boards very well, either. I think Scott is working on some improvements, although I think that's on the back burner right now while he rolls out the member program and some other features.
