The way I have figured it out is that all B204/234 engines have the older style fiber gaskets and all B205/235 use the newer style sheet metal gasket with anerobic sealant on both sides.
The V6 engine in the 9-5 model changed style between fiber and sheet metal pretty much with model year 2000-2001, but those engines don't have a problem neither before or after.
Since the cost of using new bolts only comes up to roughly $50.00 I don't see it as being an unmountable problem when you are dealing with a $20-30K car.
