Yea that's a great way to describe it, too firm and yet too soft. Every NG900 and 9-3 has this problem. There's plenty of suspension travel, but you feel every little thing in the road. This is exaggerarted in the Viggen.
I refer to it as compliance. The suspension is good it just doesn't do little bumps well. 17" tires dramatically affect the ride.
A 9-5 and a 9-3SS are examples of cars that have good compliance, the sport chassis and 17's in these cars ride better than 16's in an NG900 or 9-3. A 9-5 or 9-3 Aero will drive cirlces around a Viggen when it comes to grip and ride nicer too.
While a Viggen suspension lets you feel the road, it's not at all intolerable for regular folks in SoCal. There are plenty of reasons to want a Viggen and that nailed down feeling may be one of them.
