It is common, all the way back to 1994 cars. Happened to me at 53k miles, then again less than a year later. Unfortunately, 70-100k is often when things break, so keep an eye out for common problems.
The early 9-3 is similar to the NG900. You can expect some similar issues, including some that can leave you stranded. You can search for most of these on either this or the NG900 board. Examples, in no particular order:
direct ignition cassette (DIC)
SID display (missing pixels or columns)
belt and pulleys
fuel pump
O2 sensors
loose head bolts (search for "head bolts" or "retorque" on this board
AIC valve (rough idle, AIC fouled)
BPC valve (overboost or low boost)
valve cover leaks
thermostat
wiper washer check valves
