issue with turbo at higher boost level

Yesterday I encountered something for the very first time on my 1999 9-3 (automatic). Climbing a hill and stepping down on the throttle more than usual to accelerate, the turbo gauge climbed into the red area then the engine/turbo seemed to blip for a second, then regained boost again, the blipped again. It was quite abrupt and jerky actually, and I actually thought the car was downshifting but that was not it.
Same thing happened merging onto the highway as I was accelerating to speed coming off the entrance ramp. Like I said, it's never happened before, and this certainly wasn't the first time I've pressed the throttle a bit in the 5+ years I've had the car.
I spoke with Anders (SWEDECAR) briefly yesterday, and he was very helpful with a couple of suggestions. I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem.
Incidentally, I keep the car well serviced, use Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic, Techron fairly frequently, and ALWAYS use the highest octane gas possible.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Heckler
