Learned a tough lesson-blown engine

I bought a '99 9.3 off of eBay last year for my daughter. The price was very good for a 80,000 mile car, and we had no real problems for the next 15,000 miles. Regular oil changes, good maintenance. Then it died on her out on the 4 lane -- major damage to the engine, the dreaded sludge/oil pickup tube/oil screen disaster.
My indy Saab mechanic hasfound another engine to drop in, gave me the speech about synthetic oil forever more, now the "good deal" is back up to about what a '99 9.3 was retailing for when I bought it. ($3,000 for the engine swap and a 180 day warranty on it)
I know Saab admitted to the oil sludge problem, that our car doesn't qualify for the extended warranty, and that I am just out the money.
Is this oil sludge problem endemic to '99 9.3s?
We've owned three 900s -- all rock solid, two of which had over 280,000 miles when we sold them (cheap).
I bought the 9.3 for safety, sportiness, and the fact that Saab engines go forever. Tell me that if we are good, run the Mobil 1, change it on schedule, and promise to love it forever, that this 9.3 will get us to 200,000 miles.
