The new-old engine needs to be inspected for sludge. And the head bolts need to be torqued. While the VC is off, you can inspect for deposits. I would want this done before it is installed and if it does not look good, refuse that engine. I would want to see it for myself.
The sludge is from inferior oil and neglected oil changes. If synthetic is used with an engine with sludge deposits, the synthetic will soften the deposits which then get loose and foul the ever too fine mess oil pickup screen. So it is bad to change to synthetic if the engine has deposits, so one needs to eval first. Yes, you can fish for crud throught the sump drain hole, but with this era of engine, you need to check the head bolts and you can see a lot with the valve cover off.
BTW, just heard of an incident in Kansis City, 55,000 miles and the engine locked up, could not even drive off the lube shop property! Details will be interesting....
