Engine de-sludged - now what?

Thank heavens for this board for making me an informed Saab-er when it comes to repairs.
I went into the dealer for a regular oil change on my CPO 2000 9-3 base with 54K miles. I also complained of a whining noise when cold under the passenger side hood due to concerns that this might be the idler pulley going. They removed the serpentine belt, took a listen to the engine and determined that the balance chain was bad.
Turns out the engine is full of oil sludge. They pulled the engine and replaced two pages of parts. Some of the highlights are: balance chain and associated gears and tensioners, thermostat, vent housing and hoses ( to repair a vacuum leak, dealer indicated that clogging of this piece may have been the first step on the road to ruin), oil pressure switch (leaking), and about 3 dozen seals, gaskets, o-rings, etc. Also machined the cylinder head and cleaned everything of sludge. Service manager said it was probably a $5K repair, but is completely covered by CPO since I have had regular (<5000 miles) oil changes since purchase.
Obviously I'm ecstatic that I'm sitting on top of what seems to be a new engine for free, but I do have a couple questions. Are there any long-term implications for damage to hard engine parts due to the sludging? And, should I be considering a switch to full synthetic oil having been given a second lease on life? I currently use Saab 5W-30 semi-syn per the dealer's recommendation.
