The engine has changed very little over time in some ways. This engine is still in production for the 9-5. For those new engines, Saab insists on an oil that basically boils down to Mobil 1 0W40. So do the math.... M1 5W40 is also a good choice. Do not use Castrol FakeTek(tm). That and almost every none Mobil product that you can find on a shelf is a group III petroleum oil. If you can find a Castrol product bottled in Europe, in Litres, then that will be a real synthetic.
And for the sludging warranty, now everyone needs to use synthetic oil.
Synthetic resists polyerization and oxidation that creates sludge.
New piston rings? If so, you are going through a break-in period.
So with your re-assembled engine, you know that the head bolts are right.
