Well, we bought our 9³ with 16k unknown miles on it. I ran one 4k mi Oil Change Interval (OCI) with Castrol semi-syn 10W-30 & then went for two 10k mi OCIs with Castrol Syntec 10W-30. It was at that point (40k mi) that I learned about Castrol's deceptive marketing practices for it's Group III (highly refined petroleum) oil & switched to Mobil 1 for a "real" Group IV (PAO) full syn. It was during this first M1 (0W-40) OCI that I decided to use Auto-Rx & change to a more protective PAO.
IMO, M1 15W-50 is the _best_ oil to use in Saab turbo engines, with M1 5W-40 being the best choice for colder (below 20°F) climates. (The usual recommendations for comparable Amsoil full PAO oils applies here.) With proper preparation (Auto-Rx), filtration (Purolator PureOne) & engine maintenance, I feel 10k miles on either one of these oils is well within the limits of conservative care. M1 0W-40 is also a long-life premium syn, but because of its lower High Temperature/High Shear properties I'm really only comfortable using it in non-turbocharged engines. But that's just me. I know 0W-40 is factory fill (& recommended or required maintenance fill) for a variety of makes/models. I'm currently trying it out for 20k mi in my '90 C900 16vNA, but I won't use it again for 10k mi OCIs in our '99 9³SE turbo.
If you like to get under the car to take a look around, change out the filter at 5k mi intervals. This will provide a clean "wastebasket" & allow you to top up with an extra 3/4 qt of fresh premium syn.
