Lets start with a worst case scenario, your engine has seized up?
It all depends of what it sounds like when the starter solenoid kicks in.
If it sounds like that the starter Bendix gear is actually engaging into the flywheel teeth but the engine is not moving, that might be the case.

If it is more of a softer click from starter solenoid it might be the battery cable that is not tight on the starter lugbolt.
Or it might be a bad ignition switch under key.

Your alternator might have died without showing any warning lights and you drove the car until it is was no juice left in the battery, but in that case you would probably not have any lights at all or click from the starter solenoid.

Is it a stick shift?

Put it in 3d gear, open the hood and push the car gently backwards to see if the serpentin belt is moving (IGNITION OFF). If you see the belt moving while pushing the car, I don't think the engine is seized.

If you can get the car to move at all, try with 5th gear, if it still don't move it doesn't look good at all.
