I just did this job a few weeks ago on my 1999 Viggen with 50K miles. However, I reused the head bolts and valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket is intended and designed to reused if the valve cover comes off. I really don’t understand why everyone has suggested replacing it. I also backed off the head bolts and just did the re-torque as Saab recommends. Seeing that all the bolts only took about 28lbs to back off they all were out of spec. Plenty of stretch left in them. What I didn’t like was that extra ¼ turn. In the end I don’t think spending the $$ on new bolts is worth it and replacing the valve cover gasket is just silly. It has been back together for two weeks and 3000 miles with no leaks.
Almost anyone can do this job himself or herself. I had it apart and back together again in just under 1hr. By doing it yourself you can take time and care most shops that are getting paid wont and you get to actually see how things look in the top end. My top end looked like new (synthetic oil changes every 5k). So, Hopefully after the re-torque we will all have many safe and trouble free happy Saab miles.
