60k miles? I wouldn't think you need a 50wt oil. 40 is plenty. It's not like it's going to be 120 degrees in SC on a regular basis. My car has always run 30 or 40wt oils, and the cams and followers look pristine at 73k miles.
You can debate which brand of full synth and whether to use 5w or 0w from now until Christmas. In the end, Mobil1 0W-40 and 5W-40, as well as Amsoil's similar weights, and any GC you can find, will protect your engine very well.
When you get up around 200k like a lot of the C900 guys, you may have some more wear in your engine to compensate for. You can think about 50wt oils then.
What are the issues people discuss with the different 40wt synthetics?
(a) 0W-40 is a big spread, even for a synthetic oil, and there are concerns that it may end up being closer to a 30wt than a 40wt by the time you get to 5000 miles. Does this really matter in a car that comes with 5W-30 from the factory? Probably not.
(b) 5W-40 won't flow as well in sub-zero startup situations. For the number of times you probably start the car in sub-zero temps per year, I wouldn't worry about it. I live in Boston, and I'm not worried about the difference between a 5W and a 0W. Again, the factory specs a 5W oil in the car. Many cars use 10W oils.
(c) The additive packs are different. Some say that the extra additives in M1 5W-40 that make it a good diesel oil just reduce the ability of the oil to do what you want it to in a gasoline engine. No one has been able to show any proof of that. In fact, wear metal numbers in oil analysis reports on BitOG seem to be in favor of the 5W, but there's too little data to conclude anything.
Use the 0W-40. It's a great oil. If you feel like trying a 5W-40 or another full synthetic 40wt oil next time, go for it.
