In this case, it's not the number of miles on the engine or ambient air temperature that determines the Saab's need for tougher oil, it's the use of a turbo. The slightly heavier oils maintain better oil films in High Temperature/High Shear (HT/HS) conditions. At over 400°F & 100k rpm, a turbo's life is spent always & forever in a HT/HS hell. Will Ryan be better off using ANY Mobil 1 product over any other dino product? Of course. But why not use something designed especially for our types of engines?

Saab sent out a TSB on July '00 stating that factory fill for all Saabs since April of '00 has been premium (PAO/Group IV) 0W-40 full syn. (They also recommended all previous models use this oil as well.) Since I don't have to worry about CAFE requirements once I buy the car, I prefer to use an even more protective oil for my expensive, high-tech engine. The biggest reason why all oils thin out in a Saab turbo? The turbo! (It's that HT/HS thing again...)

The difference in flow between a 5W-xx oil & a 0W-xx oil really only shows up below minus-20°F. So if I'm ever living someplace that cold & driving a Saab turbo, I'll probably switch to 0W-40.

Yes, dual-rated oils have better/stronger additive packs than gasoline-only oils. They have better anti-wear & cleaning properties 'cuz diesel engines generate more crud. Of course, turbos generate more crud, too. And what does almost every diesel engine have these days? A turbo! Of course, the additives are your second line of defense. A durable oil film separating metal parts is your primary defense. High temps & shear forces thin out & push aside oil films, & at over 400°F & 100k rpms...

Saab's own oils have always been dual rated for use in both gasoline & diesel engines. M1 0W-40, 5W-40 & 15W-50 are all dual rated oils.
