Over the last week, my brake pedal has gone soft and stopping power has been reduced. The rotors/pads are in good condition and there are no obvious leaks or warning lights. THe pedal feels fine when at a dead stop but when you are braking hard, it takes more effort and braking performance is reduced.
THe only unusual thing that has happened since this started is that I took a hard corner while braking and the brake light and warning triangle with the "!" in it illuminated on the dash. I had this happen again on a fairly high-speed highway off ramp a couple of days ago. I checked the brake fluid level and it is above the minimum mark but not to the max.
What I am thinking is that the brake fluid is climbing the side of the res under hard cornering and tripping the sensor. I think both times it went off I was in a right hand corner and the sensor is on the right side of the res so this makes sense.
As to the soft pedal, I am wondering if I could have sucked air into the system the first time this happened. I suppose it could also be the master cylinder or vacuum brake servo.
Anyone got any thoughts or a good way to diagnose this other than bleeding the brakes and seeing if the problem goes away?
Thanks!
-Carl
