carpartsstores & fault code readers Posted by JimBlake [Email] (#141) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JimBlake) on Mon, 28 Jun 2004 06:35:45 In Reply to: Re: Check Engine Light Suggestions, Raymond Nicholas McLean, Sun, 27 Jun 2004 19:23:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you go to AutoZone or wherever, to get a check-engine light code, get them to tell you the actual code #, not just the guy's description of what caused it. I did this with a '98 Accord, & they said it was a loose gas cap, but it was the wrong code. I had a bad valve in the EVAP system.
The codes that start with P0 are 'supposed' to be the same for all carmakers, so P0131 (for example) should mean the same thing for a Saab or a Ford. But anything above P0999 is up to the carmaker to define. AutoZone isn't always up on those things, but you'd think a '98 Accord isn't an uncommon car...
For them to simply READ the code, I don't see how that can cause a warranty problem. But if you're under warranty, why go anywhere BUT a dealer?
