Sounds like it's either boost related or transmission related, or maybe ignition. Or maybe TCS.
Manual or automatic? If manual, and the rpms are above 1500, and you don't think the clutch is slipping, then eliminate the transmission. If automatic, can you tell if it's holding a gear or hunting? If it's hunting, there's something wrong with the tranny, and it's hard to say whether it's software or a mechanical problem...take it to a mechanic.
Does your car have TCS? Try disabling it and see what happens. If that fixes it, your TCS is kicking in when it shouldn't and you should have that system checked out.
If not TCS, it could be the DI. However, it seems like with the DI, this should happen more and more frequently, especially at idle/cold start, until the whole thing fails.
From your short description, I'd guess that it's none of the above...instead, it's boost related. My guess is that you're seeing boost overshoots, and the ECU is cutting off your fuel to correct for it. The problem could be with the BPC (small valve mounted at the front of the engine bay with some hoses and a wiring harness attached to it) or with the wastegate.
Check to make sure all hoses are securely attached and not cracked. A leak somewhere could cause overshoots. Then follow the hose that goes down from the BPC to the turbo. It feeds into the wastegate. Near there, there are some mechanical moving parts that are part of the wastegate actuator. Make sure nothing is broken or detached there. Seems like a detached WGA has given similar symptoms for a few people on this board.
