Accidents don't preclude CPO..... Accidents that cause title issues, salvage, flood or mileage issues, or perhaps a lemon law buyback, do preclude CPO, but let's say you had a door on your leased Saab replaced by a insurance and lease compnay approved body shop 'cause somebody ran into it, and I, as a dealer, buy that car at the end of your lease. That car with a mis-aligned door can definitely be CPO'd. Or perhaps it was a fender, or hood, or grille, or bumper, or a couple of them, bodywork or accidents or whatever you wanna' call 'em, don't eliminate a car from being Certified. Neither does being a previous rental or service loaner exclude a car from CO.
What's important about a CPO is that a car meets a high standard. Most dealers will in fact exclude a car with paint work, but if the job was done right, the used car pro who buys the car might not catch it either. The work might show up on CarFax, but have been done to a high enough standard that the car is CPO'able.
From your further inspection of two other suspicious CPO's I imagine that you've just become sensitized to body panel fit and coachwork. It's a very automated process, but has a suprisingly high degree of human craftsmanship involved. You'd get a hoot out of seeing the door alignment gal at the Trollhattan factory bending, more like wrestling, doors into proper alignment. So whatever you do, don't go near a Saturn.......
Check out the panel fit on a new/newer 9-3SS. Tiny door gaps because of mono-side body stamping. The whole side of the car is one stamping, not built up, for tighter tolerances.
