Bilstein HD shocks/struts on a Viggen?

Replacing stock units, did not want to pay $600+ for Koni's. Research said Bilsteins were better than stock, and only $425. After calling several places I was assured the Bilstein HD (heavy duty) units were correct fitment for my 2000 Viggen. Stock 17x7 rims and 215/45-17 tires.
Having installed them, I am now suspicious there is more clearance between the tires and wheel wells than before. I can't be sure as I've just spent the last 5 months looking at the car w/ 16" winter rims & tires, and so can't for sure recall how the old setup looked. :-(
All the retailers said "if the Bilstein catalog has no footnotes about the Viggen, then the HD's will work." But, can the same shock really work for both the SE -and- the Viggen, which have different springs? (And why didn't I think of this before I bought them!)
The dealer said the shocks & struts couldn't have affected the ride height, that it's solely a factor of the springs (which are original). But, another tire place said the Bilsteins -could- have altered the ride height by maybe a quarter-inch at most.
So, I'm confused and am wondering if I should just go buy stock Saab shocks/struts. Any advice appreciated.
