... & some opinions. Posted by JimBlake [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: here's the fluids & supplies..., JimBlake ![]() ![]() |
I've gathered the following opinions from the BB, along with my own, but they're not exactly supported in the owner's manual...
Many people disagree with some of these intervals, for lots of good reasons. Most of these things are inspections, so it can't hurt to look at them more often than 10,000 miles. My saturday-morning ritual is checking the tire pressures and fluid levels in the cars. As the weather gets warmer & colder, your tire pressures will change.
There's lots of discussion about oil, search any of the boards... More frequent oil change intervals are usually recommended. Some people use long intervals WITH OIL ANALYSIS. I haven't seen anybody suggest long intervals without analysis. If you don't know what oil analysis is all about, then don't go longer than your book says. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com has more information than you'll ever want to know.
While the owner's manual calls for 'semi-synthetic' engine oil, lots of people here (including me) prefer full synthetic. The ACEA A3/B3 specification is trouble. Saab's own oil apparently doesn't list that on the bottles (but maybe it meets that spec). Castrol SynTec 5W-50 says it meets ACEA A3/B3. Mobil-1, especially 0W-40 weight, is a big favorite around here. But so is Amsoil, depending on who you ask.
The engine-management system uses the direct-ignition cassette & the spark plugs to detect knocking. So use NGK spark plugs, don't substitute other brands. The platinum PFR6H plugs are chosen for long life. Some people like copper spark plugs (NGK BCPR6ES) because the extra life doesn't justify the extra cost, if you change them yourself. If you pay for shop labor, maybe that's different. One step cooler plugs (heat range 7) can be used, especially with performance modifications. You people already know who you are...
My 2001 came with blue anti-freeze. At some point, orange/red coolant was used. This is the controversial DexCool antifreeze. (Can somebody tell me what your owner's manual says for replacement intervals?) That stuff might(?) attack polymer materials in the cooling system, I think it should be changed at 2 or 3 year intervals even if the manual says longer. If you'd like to switch to the blue anti-freeze, be sure to rinse all the old stuff out. I guess they aren't very compatible with each other.
