I have a 2001 9-3 Viggen convertible, so I'm biased. I love the car, it's been very reliable and I plan on keeping it for many years.
Regarding some of the cars you mentioned:
VW Passat - VW has serious reliability issues. I have several friends that will never buy another one and they have owned modern Bugs, Jettas and Passats. All complete quality control nightmares and junk cars.
No experience with modern Subarus, but have had older ones, which were great. I think the styling sucks personally, but that's just my opinion.
Mercedes - see my comments above for VW. Modern MB's quality isn't what is used to be. Quality, particularly electricals on modern MB's is terrible. It used to be just C and E class cars, but now it's more common on the S class ones as well.
Acura - nice reliable car, but I think the styling is bland and boring. Just my humble opinion.
