I was driving our near-3 year old 9-3 -- back from the dealer no less, after an oil change -- and the DI cassette died. Luckily, I had enough momentum going that I was able to pull over to a side street. Pressed the red cross OnStar button, got a service rep, told them that my car just died, and they transferred me to Saab Roadside Assistance (which I swear has been outsourced to India), who summoned a tow truck. The tow truck came in 15 minutes. He towed the car to the dealer, and then called me to let me know that he dropped it off in front of the service bay, and wrote a note indicating all the symptoms. The next morning, Sat, the Saab service department at Barrier Saab (Bellevue, WA), woke me up with their phone call indicating that they were very sorry that this happened, and that they had replaced the DI cassette, flashed the T7 with new software, and that the car was ready to go.
Obviously, I am disappointed that the DI cassette went at 13,000 miles. But happy with the way everything was handled by Saab. When the car died, I was miffed, not knowing what went wrong. Came home, went on this forum, did some searching, and my symptoms mirrored exactly what everyone said DI cassette failure was like (no warning; electrical burn smell under the hood; engine (DI cassette) still hot even after car sits for 15-20 minutes). And felt better immediately that it was a "known" issue with Saabs -- although you never like having anything go wrong with your car, if something does, it's always better when it's something that other owners have experienced, than some strange mechanical gremlin.
It could be my imagination, but the car seems to run better than before -- idles a lot better for instance . . . .
