Shocks have no control over ride height. The springs control this. When you get lower springs, in some situations a different shock is required to prevent a shock from bottomming out. Some gas springs, such as the Bilstien HD monotubes, will make a vehicle ride around 1/2 higher. We see this with the B4 chassis Passats in any case. So sometimes shocks will increase ride height a bit.

Also, the front suspension has very little compression travel to start with. When you use lower springs, the amount of travel before hitting the bump stops is greatly reduced. To get a better balance, some of the bump stop can be removed. It is 'slid' onto the shock shaft and is located below the upper mount. When I installed Koni's on my 95SET with the stock SE springs, I cut the bump stop down to remove the end 'knob'. That was probably around 1.25" removed. Note that this change increases 'free' travel of the strut, but does not change the ride height at all.

Some folks break oil pans and bend wheels with stock springs. If you lower to an extreme, you will be getting more 'ground effects'.

When you lower the front suspension the wheel hub rotates and the camber changes. You cannot readily adjust this out. So if you lower to an extreme, the camber change will be extreme. Handling, and more importantly, tire wear may be adversely affected. Sometimes you see this in Hondas and other compacts and the camber looks very stupid. At least with the Hondas there are aftermarket solutions to allow for proper adjustment of the camber, for those who do things right.

There are no spacers in the front suspention. There is a thin zinc washer at the bottom of the spring, from 1997?+, but it is trivial I expect. You cannot remove the upper rubber spring seat and I would hesitate to hack it up to attempt to thin it out.

You seen to be driven by appearance. One method to improve the look of the wheel wheel is to fill it with a bigger tire, but there are some limits to that as well.

When you lower to an extreme, a subframe brace is probably a dangerous thing. When it gets bent, your subframe can be distorted by the brace and then your camber and toe-in are changed.

What other performance mods do you have or have planned. Wbat are your objectives. Appearance or handling?
