"scrub test" ... I came up with this years ago, but someone else coined this term for it
The upper mounts are covered with domed steel cap plates on later models. I have suspected that this was purely cosmetic. You can remove these and re apply the nuts. Do not overtighten the nuts as this can break the small studs off. There is a 'scrub test'. Engine off, hood up, parked on clean dry pavement. Move the steering wheel back and forth, just to the point where the tire wants to slip on the pavement. Do not move the steering wheel so the tire actually turns on the pavement. So the amount that you turn the wheel is not very much. Now watch how much the top of the strut shaft moves. It can move quite a bit on an old mount. Also note and tears in the rubber of the mount. You might want an assistant to work the wheel as you watch. Replace the domes steel covers if earlier removed for the test (they may serve some structural purpose)
The strut is removed, then the spring compressed and things taken apart. At that time you will have the mounts and bearings loose in your hands. If you do not replace tired out mounts at this time, you may have to later remove the struts, compress springs etc, so that is a costly operation in terms of $$$ or effort. So one can very safely say that a mount will never last though the life of a second set of shocks, so it is unwise to not replace the mounts when the shocks are renewed.
