Hi, my '97 900 SE (w/ ACC) is blowing hot air on me. With the fan off, the
hot air "oozes" out, still enough to make travel unpleasant. The
controls for the fan speed and the air direction (window, vent, floor) work
fine.
A little background. When I got the car (Feb '05) the A/C wasn't
working (can't feel the compressor kick in). This is *not* what I'm
trying to solve right now, just FYI. Several months ago, I was
dutifully cleaning out the little fan in the cabin air temperature
sensor (the "little sphincter" on the switch panel) and accidentally
cracked the tiny circuit board that the sensor (diode ? thermistor ?)
is on. For a while (a month or so) I drove like this, but the ACC
decided I needed my rear defogger on and a gale force fan speed every time
I started up. So I went in and removed the temp sensor and carefully
soldered a little jumper to fix the fault. (I do a lot of fine pitch
soldering, so I'm sure I didn't bungle this part.) Anyway, the repair
didn't seem to make any difference - I still have to turn off the ACC
system every time I start up. Unfortunately, (well, fortunately in
most cases), I mostly drive for short trips, and the weather hasn't
gotten hot until recently, so I can't say when the full-time heat
(even with ACC off) started. Recently I've been commuting 1 hour each
way, and it's pretty unpleasant.
Q : Can disconnecting the cabin air sensor damage the ACC system ?
Q : If the sensor didn't have anything to do with it, what is the
likely culprit ? Is it the "heater box" or whatever that costs $900
to replace ?
Q : Someone mentioned a pie-slice-shaped motor that moves the air
flaps, and said that it can become disconnected. Can someone describe
*where* this beastie lives ? I removed the passenger side
panel that is used to access the air sensor, and didn't see anything
that fits the description.
TIA,
Jeff
