I'm having a similar problem ('97 900SET). I replaced my neutral safety switch and when I reconnected the cable had similar experience as yours with the cable. I too can see shiny metal of the cable and the plastic tube that covers the cable slides freely up and down. When I attempt to move the shifter to "park" the cable humps up rather than moving the switch into the park position. Still messing with it, haven't found a solution yet. Seems to shift OK in the Park=>1 direction but not the other direction..like trying to push a rope ! I can move the switch with a wrench into park or neutral and the car will start.
