They are not cheap cars. Many, many people on this website will claim that they are not bad at all if you do all the work yourself. Understand, this is all coming from guys that are above average in the mechanical aptitude field. If you are confident you can fix most things yourself, then yes, this car is no worse than any other.
Saab parts tend to be more expensive than american made cars (which is typical of most european cars). It is a niche car, meaning if you live in a small town, it will be hard to find a decent mechanic that will do quality work on your car.
On certain models and years, the transmissions are spectacular. Aside from recklessness, I have never heard of a well maintained saab engine dying. Wear and tear parts will wear just as they do in all cars (water pump, alternator, starter, rotors, distributor, wires, a/c, etc.)
For performance, they are quirky and very intelligent cars. Turbos can be extremely modified and tweaked for better performance. They are not muscle cars by any definition, but they are quick and nimble in a very agile sort of way. They have more grace than a hulking mustang or corvette. If I was making six figures, I would recommend these with absolutey no reservation.
