If you are considering the saab and are concerned about the cost, I think all you need to do is consider what this car is/represents.
I think that these cars are lower volume specialty cars. As a result, most parts that are not common parts which can be shared with other vehicles are low volume. These will obviously cost more than a high volume car.
I've had 3 saabs and have found them to be fully reliable and my experience has been they run hard, meaning they work well, well over 100K miles. They are more expensive to maintain however.
If you are really concerned, go compare the subaru service costs to a saab. Check out the cost of replacing pads and rotors, full services, tune-ups, front light-bulb replacement, re-sale value, etc.
I've done these things, and I suspect you have as well, and I suspect you know the answers. There is just something that is not quantifiable of driving a more unique car. Now some people think the saab is the ugliest thing in the world, but to others it is a quirky, unique, invidiualist, cerebral, intelligent car -- a good mix of style, functionality and uniqueness. For those who see their image emodied in what they drive, a saab may be just the right thing, and for which they would pay a little extra.
Anyway, good luck.
