The SAAB (Thule) rack is really excellent: No damage to car's finish, very easy on/off, very secure, automatically locked to car when doors are locked. The only downside is that the load bars are short -- plenty of room for up to 3 bikes, but multiple canoes, kayaks, etc require add-on extenders.
I've used Thule bike mounts, tandem bike mounts, canoe mounts, cargo boxes, snow board mounts, for 10+ years and have no complaints. This has been across 3 different cars and trucks, a couple of transcontinental trips, and plenty of 4x4 roads. I have no complaints. After a few years the stuff fades, scratches, and generally looks crappy, but it works fine. Finishes last much longer if you don't leave the rack on the roof like I do though..
For carrying bikes, I highly recommend fork-mount carriers (the ones that require removal of the front wheel). Though slightly less convenient, this is a much more secure way of carrying a bike, especially when there are crosswinds and on rough roads. Any decent bike has a quick release front wheel, so removing the wheel is a 10 sec operation. Thule, Yakima, Rocky Mounts, etc. all make auxiliary wheel carriers so you can still carry the front wheels on the roof.
