Owner of new (old) 97 900SE - questions

The engine died on my 95 900SE at 170K miles last week. I don't know how I did it, but I convinced my wife that I needed to buy another NG900 - a 97 900SE with 87K. So I have a newer version of my old car back! (and, for the time being, a dead Saab in front of my house)
I got the new car from a wholesaler who got it from an auction, so maintenance info is scarce. I tried calling the selling dealer and couldn't get much service information - just basic warranty work. A few things I have questions on:
1. I don't know what kind of oil is in the engine. How can I check if it's synthetic?
2. Are the wheels on the 97SE the same size as the 95SE? The wheels on the 97 look smaller, but it might just be because they're different style rims and tires.
3. My 95 died because of "oil sludge". What are the best things I can do to be proactive about preventing that in the 97? For the old car, I used midgrade fuel, checked the plugs regularly, used Mobil 1 and changed every 5000 miles, and techron concentrate every 3 months or so. I bought it at 100K, so the damage may have already been done.
