1. What kind of oil- Only way to tell is to put synthetic in.
2. Wheel sizes- Not to be flippant, but just measure them. The wheel rims aren't going to make that much difference. The overall diameter edge-of-tire to edge-of-tire should be the same.
3. preventing sludging- Sounds like you have the right idea already. You might pull the valve cover to see if you have a problem. I did on my 97 a few months ago at 105K and found no problems.
