...and went through the same issues with the antenna on my vert. I finally put the antenna right on the dashboard - on the passenger side as far into the corner and forward as it would go. I then routed the wire under the trim pieces and down under the dash to where its out of the way when the receiver is unplugged and put away, but still easily accessible.
I went with Sirius after looking at the receiver options, station choices, etc. The antenna is very small compareed to a couple of years ago. You don't even notice it on the dash - thanks to the black band around the window. No reception problems at all.
I went with the XACT XTR2 Car Kit combo - small plug and play, and the readout matches the interior lights, etc. perfectly!
