Short trips and lots of cold starts may be the killers in this scenario I would guess.
Who in their right mind would think that the 2-5 mile "trip to church" every Sunday would be called "severe driving" but that's the way it is interpreted by Saab and many other car manufacturers too.
So oil changes every 5K is the verdict for those drivers.
What gets me though is that it must be many people doing the same kind of driving for lots of years before and we have never really seen this onslaught of sludge problems in the Saabs until mid to late 90s and later.
We have many theories like oil quality, oil change intervals, loose cylinder head bolts, too fine mesh in the oil pickup screen and then some, so it might be that we never will find the one and only reason because it may be many and when all the dots connects that's when the oil sludge appear.
Sorry to hear about your ordeal.
You will be safe after the engine rebuild but only if you stay with high quality oils and change it every 5,000 miles if you keep doing short trip driving.
