Clutch and Brake Bleeding Question 2001 9-3 Coupe Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] (#22) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Randy Thatcher) on Thu, 15 Sep 2005 18:24:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was doing my "hour or so every afternoon" 30k super service, and today was brake/clutch bleed day. I have a pressure bleeder I built for C900's and it works great. Basically it's a cap with a pressure regulator and a hookup for the air compressor. I fill the tank with fluid, put on the cap, pressurize to 10-15psi, then crack the bleeder nipple with a hose on it.
I learned quickly that this tank is MUCH smaller than a C900 tank. I blew air through the first caliper, and had to flood it until no bubbles came out. Next 3 went fine. In fact, the next 3 I did with the wheels ON. great! 17 incher's help for that...
I realized (duh) working on a 2001 9-3 from California is much easier than doing a 13 year old rusty SPG from Rochester NY. I sheared off 2 (or was it 3?) bleeder nipples doing that car 2 years ago. That sucked.
Anyway... Bleeding the clutch I found out just how high the "wall" is in the tank, so I blew air through. After about 4-5 cycles of fill & bleed, I buttoned it all up and did a test drive...
Before the bleed I never quite knew when the clutch would "bite". That's probably my primary annoyance with the car. I'd take my foot off the floor, and slowly lift until it began to catch.
Now AS SOON as I lift my foot off the floor, it starts to bite. I like it because it's more predictable, but it leads me to believe something isn't right. So I pumped the pedal a bunch, no change. I pulled back in and bled it one more time. No bubbles. Test drive, same thing.
So, does it sound OK that it "bites" the moment I start to pull off the floor, or might there be air in the system?
