I've been having some issues with my gear lever, which don't really bother me, but I'm planning on selling the car (just ordered an '06 SportCombi for European Delivery in Dec!), so I thought I'd maybe try to fix it to improve the sellability. Well, it was like that when I bought the car three years ago, and I didn't care, but anyway...
My shifter knob and the plastic shaft it's attached to rotate freely over the gear lever, and tend to come off easily when you pull up. I checked this BB to see if someone else has been having a similar problem, and I found two somewhat related things.
In this thread it's mentioned that you have to pull or twist really hard to get it off:

Well, mine comes off with just a slight pull. For instance when you shift from first to second you tend to pull it off if you're unfamiliar with this 'feature'. I've made a habit of it to slightly keep pushing down as I shift.
The fact that it rotates creates a problem with the alignment for 5th gear, as discussed in this thread:

Mine still has the plastic tab, but when the shift knob and plastic shaft are rotated the tab doesn't have any effect anymore because the tab will point in the wrong direction.
When I pull the lever up, the whole assembly of knob, plastic shaft and leather boot easily comes off, and I can see that the metal rod sticking up has a ribbed profile on the top 5cm, which I assume serves to keep the knob fixed, but it doesn't. I thought I had found a fix by putting a couple of hose clamps around it to create bigger friction between the plastic shaft and the metal rod. It stopped the knob from rotating, but unfortunately it also blocked the reverse lock that relies on the shaft sliding up and down along the rod.
Soooooo.... I've thought about glueing it but the problem is that only the top 5cm that fits directly into the knob should be glued, and I don't see how I can prevent glue from spilling into the plastic shaft that is still supposed to move up and down for the reverse lock. Does anyone have experience with this?
My next option would be to replace the whole assembly of knob and shaft. Ive checked some of the online parts vendors, but so far I've only seen knobs, not the plastic shaft it attaches to. Anyone know where to look?
Thanks,
Leo
