Fuel pump insert line removal question

This actually pertains to one of my 9000s, but the pump setup's the same and I know there's been more experience on this board for this procedure, so here's my question:
I'll be changing the fuel pump insert. What a great savings over the usual replace-everything method.
Anyone got experience heating the fuel lines to their elastic state for removal/reinstallation? I managed to destroy at least one of the internal lines in the assembly heating them for removal. Though they certainly are removed!
It would be nice to replace the feed check valve at this time to extend the replacement's lifespan, but I won't try it unless I can be positive I won't wreck the in-car lines. Odds are I'll just use the existing check valve rather than risk it.
