The fuel pump problems start from a burned spot on the motor where the brush makes contact. There are gaps between each section of windings and if these are bridged, the motor will not run. If the motor stops on this bad spot it will not re-start. This is the reason the problem starts intermittently. The banging gives the motor a little movement so that it is now on a good spot and the pump will start up. The spot starts out small and grows over time so that you will eventually not be able to use this trick to restart the car.
When my pump went bad, it would occasionally cut out while driving and then it died. I borrowed a rubber mallot, lifted the rear seats and banged on the "hump" in the middle to get it restarted. Since the vibration was enough to restart the pump, I knew it was bad and drove home and replaced it. After the replacement I dismantled the old motor and sure enough, there were black streaks where the brushes make contact with the commutator and some of the gaps were bridged.
