Even given that some manufacturers were (and maybe still are) promoting 15,000 oil service intervals on their IC engines. But with Saab was having horrible problems with sludging. Several other manufacturers had similar problems.
Was it the oil composition? Bad engine design? Idiot owners/lessees? Combination? Who knows.... The short answer is that you really don't want to play games with oil in these engines, unless your objective is to blow them up and then autopsy the result (or would the proper term be "automotopsy").
Maybe you're just curious? Then go forth, and report your results! But if in it for the longest possible run, I'd recommend a virgin oil delivery system without added filter, and intervals in the 3,000 to 5,000 range.
I'm stunned to hear that TDIs can take such long intervals, especially considering their reliance on turbochargers. I've seen a turbo cut open with all sorts of coking plugging all the oil passages -- yeech! But that was pre-watercooling days.
