Lots of power and front wheel drive makes very high demands on tire traction.

You have enough torque, that your traction control will limit torque to deal with tires that do not have enough grip. For example, with my 9-5 Aero, new snow tires make the vehicle very slow.

And tires that do not have enough grip will wear faster than a softer stickier tire if the lesser tires is slipping. So it is not a simple situation compared to a vehicle that does not have the ability to deliver torque that exceeds tire grip.

All tires will age harden from use and heat. Until the tire does this, it is probably more prone to wear. I get good miles out of performance tires, even tires with a wear rating of 140. But I don't abuse them earlier.

A tire with a high wear rating will last a long time and before its useful tread is used up, the wet and try traction will be poor from age hardening. In some cases, wet traction can become so dangerous, that one needs to trash tires with lots of remaining tread. So not much economy in that situation.

So, all season tires will have a hard time on a Viggen as they probably will not have enough tire traction on dry pavement. With the ice around here, a true winter tire will be valuable as well.

I have used snow tires in the Topeka/KC area since 1997. On K10 in the winter, I think that not having snow tires would be crazy. No one else has decent tires and when folks are out of control, it is good to be able to brake and steer around problems instead of being slave to Newtons laws of motion. Good tires are a form of accident insurance. No cash payout, just accident avoidance.

And tire traction is what controls emergency stopping distances. When you see or read about stopping distance reports for new vehicles, what you are seeing is more a test of the tires than anything else. I suggest that you read test reviews of tires at Tirerack. And there are owner reports as well. Note any reports of tires becoming noisy.
