I understand that the classic 900's with autos are cheaper to replace with sticks. The 3 speed Borg Warner in a C900 is a miserable slushbox. The NG900 1994+ Aisin Warner 4-speed auto with sport setting and lock up torque converter is a gem, and durable too. So don't reject an automatic NG900, history has been overcome.
Otherwise the four cylinder NG900s are nice, turbo or regular, the V6's require a more skillful touch. I'm about to buy a 96 900SE V6 Vert myself to replace or '93 C900S Vert. I drive a '95 900S with automatic and it's really satisfying. It's a little loose and clunky body and suspension wise compared to my 9-5, but a real decent car, peppy, the auto in sport winds out nicely. NG 900s have ABS, airbags and are just a really strong, safe car with gobs of storage, built like a tank. Very much a classic Saab, but somewhat modernized.
