I bought a 2001 9-3 SE 5sp this summer. I fed it mid grade gas until the last two fill ups when I tried regular. I also put on snow tires and the weather got cool and damp (Seattle 40-60F) about the same time. As far as I can tell the car runs smoother and has more torque below 2000 rpm than with the higher octane gas. I am an economical driver and rarely use anywhere near the rated hoursepower, so I don't notice any downside. I also had intermittent check engine warnings on mid grade (gas cap?), but have not yet seen it with regular (but this could be cool weather too). MPG is 27 in trafic which is the same or a hair better than with mid grade. Has anyone ever seen power/torque curves for different fuel grades? I've looked over old postings and a road and track article but they don't say much about lower engine speeds- just peak power and 0-60.
