I think that's backwards. As the outboard pad wears, the caliper draws in towards the center of the car. So... what about excess thickness? Using extra rattle-shims or something like that? Got any fit issues where the outer part of the caliper doesn't fit flat against the pad backing plate?
It shouldn't rub there anyway. I've got less than 1000 miles on new pads & rotors on the front. So my calipers are about as far outboard as they go, & the steel rims still don't rub.
