Will new DIC last, plus many questions

Considering buying relative's 2001 9-3, auto with 41K. It's a very excellent price. History -
DIC died a couple of weeks ago. Towed to dealer, who supposedly replaced it with the new DIC that's the replacement per the recall. Are the new DIC's really available already? Any discussion yet how likely these "new" DIC's might serve a longer life?
Mobil 1 was not used. Is this really a concern?
It has manual climate control. Some post said ACC is more bullet proof. Am I looking at replacing heater core at certain mileage?
Idler never replaced. Car always serviced.
No flaming please - I'm coming from a Land Rover Discovery. The 9-3 steering seems quite rubbery. Is this normal?
Most of all, how DIY friendly is it? Engine bay looks pretty tight. Is it easy to change oil, idler, belt, alternator, water pump etc.? Does changing battery trip off something else that you need a OBDII or dealer to reset?
Is renewing brake fluid/bleeding system a simple process?
Will headliner eventually fall, becoming drape?
Thing is, I've checked around my area and even the indy shop charges the same labor rate as a land rover dealer, unbelievable, isn't it. Of course, most obvious saving would be fuel efficiency but living in a hilly area, I would guess a 4WD might have an edge? Maybe I'm talking myself into a (gasp!) Subie.
Any practical advice/thoughts, please share. Most appreciative.
