97 900se 4cyl turbo w/75k miles
Lots of rain today plenty of puddles on the way to work. Drove to lunch. Got in the car after work and noticed this electrical smell maybe plastic? Running fine but I went on full sensory alert after all this is my second Saab (94 900s was the first). 40 minute drive in the rain home in light traffic half freeway half city. Smell seemed intermittent. Car running fine. Got home and it smelled a little stronger. waited an hour then drove to store and the smell is back. On the way home from the store the smell is there and the battery light comes on accompanied by the warning chime (no warning triangle light though just the batt. light). Popped the hood checked for the smell seemed to come from serp belt side near the alternator sort of. Took a test drive - no more batt. light, but still smells. Pulled in the garage and popped the hood again and let it idle for a while looking for smoke and trying to find the smell. At this point the smell is pretty strong and the people upstairs complained about the burnt electrical smell so I parked it and started checking the bbs for help. Doesn't seem like the DIC if they fail without warning but what do I know. I'm going out of town tomorrow night after work for a 100 mile drive half of it in remote mountain area (an hour straight of twisties) I think we'll take the Land Cruiser to be safe, but it's just not fun like the Saab.
Do I risk driving to work as another test?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
