and if it gets too bad there are always tire chains or cables. Only once in my 25 years of driving a Saab here, did I have chains and snow tires not get me up a hill. It was roughly a 25% grade and glare ice with water floating on top. The chains were literally sliding around on the tires.
Fo the price of gas you'd save with a 4 cyl 2WD car, you can buy and keep a set of cables in your trunk for the couple of times you'll need the extra traction to get started.
Do not forget also to use them going down the hill when conditions warrant such a move, but try praticing that before you really need it.
