I have a 98 900 non-turbo with 150,000 mi. Last fall it would fire and stall. Then fire and stall after a few seconds. This would continue on until after about the 20th time (each previous time it would run a little bit longer) when it would fire and continue to run but very poorly. After about a 5 minutes of a stumbling idle it would smooth out and then run prefect the rest of the day. This only happened in the morning. While I was trying to determine what needed to be done I had replaced the thermostat as I could see by the gauge that the engine was not coming up to temp. As soon as I did that (fall of 04) the problem went away.
I naturally figured it was not the fact that the thermostat had been replaced and that at some point it would start again. I then read a post on this site that suggested the computer would get screwed up if a complete warm up was not seen after x amount of starts causing my problem. All I can say is it worked in my case.
