In the beginning we heard that the black could replace the red, and it might be true? But after reading the service bulletin that Saab sent out, I can't say for sure if it is a good idea to do it.
It make sense in what they are saying in the bulletin that the sensing parameters between the two cassettes are different and that, in the long run could cause damage to the engine.
Imaging if the knock sensing device is not calibrated properly so that your engine is allowed to ping more than it should and subsequently would crack a piston. Having the engine rebuilt just to have another piston crack again.
I also noticed that when removing the black plastic cover off several vintage red and black cassettes showed that the ignition coils looks different between them.
That is a source of concern to me if the coils are pulling more power than the fuel computer is designed for and maybe frying the Trionic computer in the long run.
But this is just me talking, being overly cautious with my customers cars.
