I liked Volvo for the underdog, "I'm not German" option. They were cheaper to maintain than the German cars, and safe. Ford has turned them into an all FWD division. The S60R is awesome, I really like it although it is outside of my price range and I don't really know about the styling. However, Ford has allowed for them to develop much better interiors than they used to make. Reliability has been called into question as of late. I blame that on Ford. Volvo never had the massive recalls that now affect it when it was independent. It looks more and more like there will be 3 or 4 auto companies in the next 10-15 years, I'm not sure GM will be one of them(or Ford either for that matter).
The 300 HP engine is the same that has been in service since '94, complete with frequent turbo failures. Ask a Volvo tech. That same engine with a software upgrade can make about that same number. It does give up AWD and the manual transmission ( both desirable to me) but for about $25-30,000 dollars less on the used market. I went to Saab for the same 'underdog' overtones. I hope they don't become another Pontiac division.
